How to Cancel Automatic Payments and Subscriptions in PayPal
Stop a merchant's automatic-payment authority in PayPal, then verify the underlying subscription and its final billing separately.
Quick answer
A PayPal automatic payment is a merchant's authority to charge your PayPal account. Cancelling that authority can stop future PayPal automatic payments, but it does not by itself prove that the merchant has ended the underlying service contract. Check the merchant's own cancellation status and final billing separately.
Find the merchant and automatic payment
PayPal's current help page says to go to Settings, choose Payments, then open Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments. Select the merchant to view the agreement. Compare the merchant and any displayed agreement details with your receipt and statement before changing anything.
Stop the PayPal authority
On the selected merchant page, choose the option to cancel the automatic payment. PayPal says that page can also show the merchant's contact information and lets you change the backup payment method. Save a screenshot of the cancelled authority and its merchant name; do not replace the payment method when the aim is to stop the authority.
SubsCraft tip: Record the merchant, billing owner, cancellation date, and confirmation together so a future reminder has the evidence needed to check the result.
Cancel the service when the merchant requires it
Open the merchant account named in the agreement or receipt and use its cancellation route if the subscription is still active. Keep the merchant cancellation confirmation as well as the PayPal confirmation. The two records answer different questions: one shows the payment authority, while the other shows whether the service contract and access have ended.
Confirm pending charges, access, and refunds
A charge that was already authorised or pending may need separate review. Check the merchant's stated access end date and final billing result before assuming that cancelling the authority reverses a charge. Cancelling the payment authority does not itself request a refund; separately check the merchant's and applicable payment channel's refund or dispute processes, and keep the receipt, agreement, and confirmations.
If the record is missing or the biller differs
If there is no matching automatic-payment record, compare the statement descriptor with the receipt. The charge may be billed directly by the merchant, through an app store, or by another wallet or card provider instead of PayPal. Use the billing owner on the purchase record, rather than cancelling an unrelated PayPal agreement.
