How to Cancel Telstra Internet Service
Use Telstra's current cancellation route, keep a provider switch separate from disconnection, and verify the final bill and modem outcome.
Identify the Telstra internet service and account holder
This guide covers Australian consumer Telstra home internet. Telstra currently lists several home internet families, including Internet Only, Upfront, 5G, and satellite plans, in its Critical Information Summary inventory. Older services, business plans, mobile broadband, home phone, bundles, and promotional hardware can have different terms.
Find the billing account number, service address, plan name, account holder or authorised contact, and the Critical Information Summary or order summary that applies to the service. Check My Telstra for any minimum term, bundled voice service, modem, accessory, or Device Payment Contract. Do not apply a fee, notice period, or device rule from another Telstra product to this account.
Record the intended end and transfer before contacting Telstra
Write down the date you are making the request, the end date you want, and whether the address will be disconnected or moved to another provider. Also record any phone number or voice service in the bundle, the equipment at the property, outstanding device payments shown in My Telstra, and when replacement internet is expected to start.
This distinction matters. Telstra's internet and home phone cancellation page says an nbn voice and data bundle is cancelled as a whole, and moving a home phone to another provider does not automatically disconnect Telstra home broadband. A migration order and a cancellation request are therefore not interchangeable; ask both providers to state who is responsible for each step and date.
Use Telstra's current cancellation route
For consumer home internet, start from Telstra's cancellation page and use its chat now route. Telstra's separate contract and cancellation page also shows the My Telstra path: Services, select the service, View or manage your plan, then Cancel your service. That page warns that you may still need to contact Telstra to complete the cancellation, so do not treat an unfinished screen or message as confirmation.
Tell the representative the exact service address, product, requested end date, and transfer intent. Ask them to identify the applicable plan document, any cancellation cost, and the scheduled service end date. Telstra's internet cancellation page says there may be a cost and that the representative can state the contract payout amount; it does not publish one universal fee or notice period for every internet plan.
SubsCraft tip: Keep the request date, expected service end date, and expected final bill in one record, then add the written confirmation when Telstra sends it.
Separate disconnection from a provider migration
If another provider is taking over the connection, do not ask Telstra to disconnect first unless the providers confirm that sequence. Give the new provider's expected activation date to Telstra and ask whether the transfer order will close this specific service or whether a separate cancellation remains necessary. Keep both order references.
If the account includes an nbn voice service, confirm whether it will end with the internet bundle. Telstra warns that a disconnected nbn voice service does not have a soft dial tone for Triple Zero calls. Arrange another way to call emergency services before the voice component ends if anyone at the address relies on it.
Check the final bill and equipment outcome
Ask Telstra to itemise normal service charges through the confirmed end date, any contract payout, device balance, credit, and amount already paid. The general contract page says that where a Device Payment Contract is ended early, its remaining repayments are due in one final payment. Confirm that such a contract actually appears on this account rather than assuming every modem is financed that way.
Handle the modem under Telstra's current modem return page. It says that when a customer cancels, changes to a plan without voice, or changes technology within 24 months, the modem must be returned or a $200 non-return fee applies. It also says Telstra sends a digital return code within seven days of replacement or disconnection. Ask whether that rule applies to this modem, wait for Telstra's return instruction, keep the Australia Post tracking or store receipt, and do not return the nbn connection box that stays with the property.
Confirm Telstra internet cancellation
Obtain written confirmation of the service address, product and bundled components ending, effective end date, final invoice, device or modem outcome, and remaining account balance. Check that internet access ends on the agreed date and that the final invoice matches the itemisation; do not stop the payment authority as a substitute for settling a valid final bill.
If Telstra's result does not match its confirmation or the applicable plan document, first use Telstra's official complaints process and keep the complaint reference. That page says you can ask Telstra to escalate an unsatisfactory resolution and then take an unresolved telecommunications complaint to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman. The TIO is an external escalation route after Telstra has had the opportunity to resolve the complaint, not the cancellation channel.
