This guide covers a personal ChatGPT Plus subscription. It does not cover ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Edu billing. Cancelling Plus stops a future renewal; it does not delete the OpenAI account or its chats.

Before you cancel, identify the billing channel

Check the latest receipt and the subscription lists for the Apple Account or Google Account you used when subscribing. Record the next billing date and confirm which ChatGPT account currently has Plus. A charge on one platform cannot be cancelled from another.

Do not delete the account as a shortcut. OpenAI describes account deletion as permanent, and its Apple cancellation guidance specifically says deleting the ChatGPT account on the web does not cancel an Apple-billed subscription.

Cancel ChatGPT Plus step by step

1. Sign in at ChatGPT.
2. Select your profile icon, then Settings.
3. Select Billing.

OpenAI says to cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge.

If Apple or Google Play bills you

The store that shows ChatGPT in its subscription list owns the cancellation and any refund request.

Apple App Store

On an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, choose Subscriptions, select ChatGPT, tap Cancel Subscription, and confirm. Apple may charge the App Store account 24 hours before the current period ends, so do not wait until the renewal day. Plus features remain until the current paid period ends.

If ChatGPT is not listed, check the Apple Account shown on the receipt. Cancelling at chatgpt.com or deleting the ChatGPT account on the web does not replace this Apple action.

Google Play

On Android, open Google Play with the Google Account used to subscribe, choose Menu > Subscriptions, select ChatGPT, tap Cancel subscription, and follow the prompts. Uninstalling the Android app does not cancel Plus. A subscription originally created on chatgpt.com must still be cancelled on chatgpt.com, even if the app is used on Android.

OpenAI says subscription fees are non-refundable. Cancelling does not automatically open a refund request. Ask OpenAI about an eligible direct charge, or Apple or Google when that store collected the payment; the biller's refund rules control.

The OpenAI account and chats remain after an ordinary Plus cancellation. Account deletion is a separate, permanent action and is not required to stop renewal.

Why the cancel option may be missing

• The wrong channel is open: check the receipt, Apple Subscriptions, and Google Play Subscriptions rather than trying every cancellation button.
• The wrong account is signed in: check each likely OpenAI, Apple, or Google account once and match it to the receipt.
• You no longer control the OpenAI email: OpenAI support says it can locate a direct subscription using the account email, the payment card's last four digits, and the date of the most recent payment.
• Plus already has an end date: a cancellation confirmation or expiry date can replace an active Cancel button. Do not restart the plan just to test it.

How to confirm ChatGPT Plus is cancelled

Before the next billing date, check all of the following:

• the same biller now shows an end date or cancelled renewal;
• the final confirmation screen or email is saved;
