How to Cancel Medibank Insurance

Identify the Medibank product, use the health membership contact route where applicable, and confirm the cover end date.

Identify the Medibank product before cancelling

This guide covers an Australian Medibank private health insurance membership, including Hospital, Extras, combined Hospital and Extras, or Ambulance cover. Medibank Travel, Pet, Life, Income Protection, and Overseas Student Health Cover have separate insurers, policy documents, and contact routes. Use Medibank's contact page by product when the policy is not ordinary domestic health cover.

Find the membership number, people covered, payment frequency, latest premium, requested cover end date, and any recent or pending claim. If only one person or one part of the cover should change, say that clearly: removing a member, changing Hospital or Extras, and ending the whole membership are different requests.

Call Medibank or visit a store

Medibank's official cancelling membership page says a health policy must be cancelled by speaking to Medibank on the phone or visiting a store. Call 1300 729 698 or use the store finder linked from that page. Medibank says this conversation is required to safeguard the member and explain the implications of cancelling.

My Medibank and web messaging can help manage or discuss cover, but the current cancellation page does not present them as a completed cancellation route. Do not treat a message, quote, cover comparison, or payment-method change as cancellation. Ask the staff member to record the requested effective date and give you a reference number.

SubsCraft tip: Record the exact request type, effective date, final premium, refund or balance, and confirmation reference so a cover change or suspension is not mistaken for cancellation.

Check the 30-day cooling-off option

Medibank gives 30 days from the date new or changed cover begins to review it. If you change your mind within that period and have made no claims, Medibank says it can transfer you to a more appropriate cover from the original start date or cancel the cover and refund premiums. It also says you generally cannot return to a Medibank cover that has closed.

Cooling off is not the ordinary cancellation rule. Tell the representative if the request is within 30 days, confirm that no claim has been made, and ask whether the original start date and refund treatment apply. Outside that window, do not assume an unused part of a premium will be refunded; ask Medibank to state the final paid-through date, any refund, and any amount still due under the policy.

Understand what ending health cover changes

Medibank warns that ending Hospital cover can affect the Medicare Levy Surcharge for people above the applicable income thresholds and may contribute to Lifetime Health Cover loading when Hospital cover is taken out later. Ask for the cover end date in writing if you are moving to another health fund so you can check for a gap in Hospital cover.

For Ambulance cover, Medibank notes that another Medibank policy, a state ambulance scheme, or eligibility for free ambulance services may already provide protection. Confirm the actual replacement before cancelling. For a recent or pending claim, ask which date of service and cover conditions control it; the cooling-off refund specifically requires that no claim has been made.

If cost or circumstances are temporary, ask whether suspension for financial hardship or another supported reason is available. Suspension is an alternative with its own eligibility and restart conditions, not proof that the membership has ended.

Use the correct route for another insurance type

The health-membership number is not a universal Medibank cancellation line. The current cancellation page directs Pet members to the Pet customer service route, Travel policyholders to the Travel cancellation number shown there, and Life policyholders to a number that depends on when the policy began. OSHC also has its own support route on the contact page.

Open the product-specific policy and contact details before asking about the effective date, refund, claim treatment, or outstanding premium. Those outcomes belong to that product's terms, not the private health membership process described above.

Confirm Medibank cancellation

Before ending the call or leaving the store, ask Medibank to state the product and people cancelled, cover end date, last premium date, refund or amount due, and treatment of any pending claim. Request written confirmation and save the call reference, email, or store receipt.

Check the next scheduled payment and membership record after the effective date. If they do not match the confirmation, contact Medibank through the same health route and quote the reference. For Travel, Pet, Life, Income Protection, or OSHC, follow the relevant contact path instead of retrying the health cancellation process.
