How to Switch Health Insurance in Australia Without Restarting Every Waiting Period

Compare replacement cover and coordinate dates so served waiting periods carry over where portability applies, without assuming new or higher benefits start immediately.

Confirm the replacement before ending old cover

Ask the incoming registered insurer to confirm the replacement policy, portability treatment, waiting periods, and start date before the old policy ends. Served waiting periods can generally carry across for equivalent or lower benefits, but new or higher benefits and unfinished waits may still have a waiting period.

This is general information, not personal insurance, tax, legal, or financial advice.

Compare Hospital and Extras separately

Hospital cover and Extras cover have different benefits and limits. For Hospital, compare exclusions, restrictions, excess, co-payments, agreement hospitals, and gap arrangements. For Extras, compare annual limits, per-service limits, provider rules, and benefits already used in the current year. A lower premium does not by itself mean equivalent cover.

Ask the incoming insurer to identify every benefit it treats as equivalent, lower, new, or upgraded. Confirm how any unfinished waiting period will be calculated and whether a gap between policies changes the portability outcome.

Coordinate the Transfer Certificate

Request a Transfer Certificate, also called a Clearance Certificate, through the incoming insurer or as directed. Check the people covered, old and new policy dates, Lifetime Health Cover information, and recorded waiting periods. The administrative period for issuing a certificate is not permission to leave an uninsured gap; coordinate the actual start and end dates with both insurers.

Keep the old insurer's cancellation confirmation and the incoming insurer's written acceptance of the certificate. Ask about any final premium, refund, or balance.

Treat LHC and MLS as separate checks

Lifetime Health Cover loading, waiting-period portability, and the Medicare Levy Surcharge are separate questions. Confirm LHC details on the certificate and use current Australian Taxation Office information for MLS; do not rely on an old income threshold copied into a switching checklist.

The existing Bupa and Medibank guides remain provider-specific cancellation references. Their terms do not replace the incoming insurer's portability decision.

SubsCraft tip: Record both policy dates, the certificate status, and every new or upgraded benefit so a coverage gap or fresh waiting period is visible before switching.
